Building a successful company is a lot easier when you are doing something you enjoy and working on a product you love.
Bicycles with their sleek lines and speed caught my eye from a young age. When I was 11 years old I bought my first bike from Young’s of Lewisham in South London for £21. My love of bikes has since led me to try other frames, styles, and materials, but I always come back to steel for its comfort and flexibility.
My forty years working as a Creative Director in advertising took me all over the world with some of the best agencies, but one thing remained constant: bicycles. I competed in bike events in England, NZ, Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia. My biggest achievements have been to ride from KL to Singapore for Charity and to take part in the inaugural L’Eroica Britania in England’s Peak District. One downside of my cycling adventures are injuries - a broken collarbone along with three ribs and a fractured hip – but I’m still in the saddle.
However, it was while learning to make a bicycle frame, welding torch in hand, that the idea for Lola Bicycles was born. I did the math and realized making bespoke bicycles myself in Singapore wasn’t going to work, but surely I wasn’t alone in my desire for a high-quality steel bike that looked as good as it rode. I finished that first bike, named Lola after my youngest daughter and set about making the company a reality.
Since then there have been several prototypes, countless conversations with designers and manufacturers and other experts in the field at events around the world. Having made several fixed gear samples we finally decided to focus our attention on a bike with an internal gear hub.
Everything about a Lola is selected with form and function in mind, and that means the best in quality and design. The frame is made with some of the finest steel there is, while integrated lights, a customized bar stem, and the iconic Lola holes in the top tube are some of our unique features. From there, we build by hand using traditional brazing and welding techniques, while adding modern lightweight materials and quality components to create a premium bike like no other.
Our Reasons for Steel
The use of modern steel insures that our frames are strong, light, stiff, comfortable rust resistant and environmentally friendly. Steel’s ability to resist damage and flex where other materials – aluminum or carbon - would break, makes it an investment in functional beauty and style that perfectly fits a Lola.
The Lola Hub with its steel frame and 11-speed Shimano Alfine Hub is all dressed up and ready to roll. A Miche Crank, a one-piece alloy-forged crankset, and Lola carbon fork keep things light while a sleek Brooks saddle helps you ride in comfort and style.
The future remains a mystery, but we are currently exploring new models, including a fixed gear frame, and a super light road frame. While Lola calls Singapore home, we are fully aware that our potential customers live and ride all over the world. With that in mind, we are planning to go global as soon as possible so that everyone can share in the Lola experience.
